What is gum disease?

Periodontitis gum disease or pyorrhoea is a bacterial infection of the tissues that support the teeth, which are

a. Bone,

b. Periodontal ligament,

c. Gingiva and

d. Cementum in the root of teeth

These are the tissues that are responsible for holding the teeth stable within the jaw bone.

Periodontitis is a disease which if uncontrolled / treated can lead to serious consequences such as loose teeth, bad breath, loss of multiple teeth and thereby compromising the quality of life. Periodontitis has also been proven to be associated with / can lead to heart conditions, poor control of diabetes, neurological conditions etc

It is crucial to intervene early and seek professional support from qualified professionals.

The effects of bacteria is further complemented by other factors that can worsen the disease and that is what we at Lovesmile focus on.

At Lovesmile, we approach the disease on a holistic method, identifying every possible factor, addressing each of them and above all engaging the top of the range laser technology combination in treating the disease – a combination of detailed laser cleaning to eliminate bacteria from periodontal pockets and then using the diode laser to enhance new bone and gingiva formation at a subcellular level through photobiomodulation, also called as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). We also significantly reduce bacterial numbers utilising the bactericidal property of lasers

The causes of periodontitis.

Periodontal disease is multifactorial – there are several factors that can lead to gum disease or periodontitis. Primarily it is caused by bacteria and the presence of any predisposing factors or aggravating factors can lead to established gum disease.

Ensuring good personal oral hygiene combined with professional hygiene assistance will prevent periodontitis.

Compromised oral hygiene along with contributing factors leads to inflammation of the gingiva, which in turn facilitates bacterial ingress into the gingival tissues. This will lead to the destruction of the supporting alveolar bone (jaw bone holding the teeth in place) along with damage to other supporting tissues.

Chronic periodontitis when untreated can lead to mobility and loss of teeth.

Studies have also shown that bacteria associated with periodontal disease can enter the bloodstream and lead to numerous other diseases such as cardiovascular disease (stroke, heart attack), diabetes, lung disease, osteoporosis and pregnancy complications.

Prevention and treatment

It is always best to prevent, but should you develop gum disease it is a lot easier to reverse and treat the condition at its early stages.

The longer it is left untreated, the risks are higher and robust, advanced treatment will be required to control the disease.

Periodontitis can be prevented by a healthy diet, a good lifestyle and very importantly good oral hygiene habits.

Each patient is different and that is why at Lovesmile we pay utmost care in thorough diagnosis working around different factors that can cause the disease and then devising a treatment plan to address each of the factors combined with the most advanced bacterial elimination treatment with lasers. Then it is further followed up with laser photobiomodulation, which encourages healthy tissue formation.
