Sinus Lift Procedure for Dental Implants

A sinus lift can be performed when there is not sufficient bone in the upper jaw, or the sinuses are too close to the jaw for dental implants to be placed.

There could be several reasons for this:

1. Bone may have been lost because of periodontal disease.

2. Losing teeth, particularly the back teeth, can lead to bone loss. Once teeth are missing, bone can start to be resorbed by the body. Teeth that have been missing for a long time often don’t have enough bone left to place dental implants.

3. The maxillary sinus may be too close to the upper jaw for implants to be placed

Sinus lift (or sinus augmentation), is a dentist-executed procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw bone in the molar to premolar area, in order to render it thicker (jaw bone augmentation). The bone is often added between the jaw and the sinus cavities at either side of the nose. In order to make room for the bone, the sinus membrane is lifted.

How is sinus lift performed?

First of all, an x-ray is taken before the procedure, so the dental surgeon at Lovesmile can study the anatomy of your jaw and sinus. Then the dental surgeon cuts the gum tissue near the premolars and molars exposing the bone. Bone-graft material is then packed into the space where the sinus was, above the jaw. The gum tissue is then stitched closed.

Associated risks with a sinus lift

We always carry out all of our treatments carefully and thoroughly to ensure that any risks are minimal. There are a couple of risks that are associated with this procedure, for example:

This is quite an uncommon problem but there is still a small risk of infection with the sinuses or gums. But we do monitor our patients after treatment to ensure that they are fine and safe.

A sinus lift is a safe and clinically proven procedure and when completed with expertise and care it will provide the best, most stable base for life-changing implant surgery. As with any surgical procedure, at Lovesmile we ensure that you understand all aftercare instructions and we will check back with you regularly to ensure the healing is going smoothly.

Individuals who have previously been told they were unable to receive dental implants in their upper jaw after losing a tooth may qualify for a sinus lift, which can be provided by a Lovesmile surgeon to improve the appearance of a person’s smile.
